A spoonful of sugar put into my morning coffee with THIS spoon has great meaning. It is a spoon from my mother’s set that we used growing up. About 25 years ago, I decided the old set was too shabby and she needed a fancy new stainless set. I didn’t understand, back then, the importance of connection, comfort, and memories that come with “old stuff.” As I hold this spoon, I am transported back to the red Formica counters, the varnished plywood kitchen cabinets, the grey linoleum flooring…. and my dear mom in her apron. This woman saved me from a life in foster homes when she and my father adopted me as a toddler. She taught me values, discipline, how to love, and what it feels like to be loved. This spoon brings more than the sugar to my coffee cup.
